Turn a GLB
into voxels.

It runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

What it does, and what it doesn’t

It fills a grid of cubes wherever the model’s surface passes through, then writes the cubes out as a .vox file.

  • Size. You pick how many voxels the longest side gets. The other sides keep the model’s shape, so a tall figure comes out narrow.
  • Hollow or solid. Hollow keeps just the outer skin. It looks the same and the file is small. Solid fills in what the skin closes around; a model with a hole in it stays hollow, because there’s nowhere for the fill to stop.
  • Colour. Clayground’s painted colours, plain material colours and textures all carry across, and are merged down to the number of colours you pick. A .vox holds at most 255.
  • Front. The model’s front ends up facing you in MagicaVoxel’s front view. Files from the browser studio say which way they face; Quest exports face the other way, and the automatic setting accounts for that.
  • Left out. Animation, bones, shine, glow and transparency. GLBs squeezed with Draco or Meshopt aren’t opened; re-export without compression.

Putting it in Voxels

Voxels, the world that used to be called Cryptovoxels, has no formal file spec, so these numbers come from its community wiki. Check them in-world before you build around them.

  • Vox model. A .vox up to 32 × 32 × 32 voxels, up to 200 on a parcel. Pick size 32 here.
  • Megavox. A .vox that is exactly 126 × 126 × 126, up to 5 on a parcel. Pick size 126 and the file is saved in that box, with your model standing on its floor.
  • Hosting. A parcel shows a model from a web address that starts with https:// and ends in .vox, so the file has to be hosted somewhere that serves it as it is.
  • Recolouring. Voxels only offers its Colors setting for models with five colours or fewer.

After the conversion

Open the .vox in MagicaVoxel to tidy it, recolour it or render it, or in Blender with the MagicaVoxel importer extension. Both, and more, are on the tools page.

Where a GLB comes from

Clayground’s browser studio and Quest app both export GLB. To get a Quest export onto your computer, use the pairing code page. Want to see inside the file first, or print it? The GLB viewer and STL converter does that.
