What the site stores
Navigation and model preview work without an advertising profile. The current file selection is held in browser memory and is cleared when the page is reloaded. We do not silently save your sculpt to a website account.
Browser studio
The free browser studio at /sculpt keeps your work on your own device. None of it is sent to our servers unless you choose an upload. Clearing your browser’s site data removes it, so use Save project to keep an editable copy you control.
It uses your browser’s IndexedDB storage (a database named “clayground-studio”) for four things: an automatic recovery copy with a small picture of it and when it last changed, any named copies you save with their pictures, a staged export if you choose to upload a sculpt, and a recording of how your recent sculpts were made (the brush touches and edits, never a picture) so the studio can play it back as a film.
It also uses localStorage for small settings. Every name starts with “clay.”. A first sculpt can leave these, and a few more keep one-time hints and choices:
- “clay.streak”: the last day you sculpted and how many days in a row.
- “clay.firstSteps”: which first steps you have ticked.
- “clay.milestones” and “clay.milestonesShown”: which milestones you have reached.
- “clay.toolsTold”: which tool hints you have seen.
- “clay.studio.starters”: that the starter cards were used or closed.
- “clay.returning”: that you have been here before.
- “clay.reminderAsked”: how often the daily reminder was offered.
- “clay.light”: the lighting you picked.
Games and counting returns
The games keep their own small settings in localStorage: your daily puzzle result and streak, your Smoosh fighters and match settings, and the room you were last in. Your Smoosh fighters are also kept a second time in the “clayground-studio” IndexedDB database, so a browser clean-up that empties one does not take them, and you can download them as a file from the Smoosh menu. “clay.seen” is the first day this browser visited, and “clay.retention” is the first day you sculpted or played each thing and which later days have been counted, so we can tell, in total, how many people come back. Only those day numbers are ever sent, with no name, code or sculpt.
Your browser also keeps four notes for as long as the tab is open (sessionStorage): “clay.source”, “clay.campaign”, “clay.postedOn” and “clay.scroll”. The first three say how this visit started, for example from a search, a social link or a campaign tag in the link, and are sent with the anonymous page counts, never with a name or a sculpt. “clay.scroll” is only how far down each page you had scrolled, so Back puts you in the same place. It is never sent anywhere.
Optional authentication
The sign-up, log-in and My stuff pages load Privy’s sign-in code as soon as they open, before you press anything. Through Privy, Cloudflare Turnstile (a check that you are not a bot) and WalletConnect (wallet connections) can load too. They can set cookies on their own addresses (such as privy.io and cloudflare.com) and keep their own databases in this browser (for example for wallet connections), to keep you signed in and to protect sign-in. Once you are signed in, “clay.account” remembers your handle and “clay.artistCredit” the name you want to be credited by, so the header can greet you. The home page, the studio and the games load none of these. Privy’s privacy notice says what it keeps. Clearing browser storage can end a session; account and wallet recovery are governed by the provider’s supported procedures.
References
When you open References in My stuff, Online, this browser keeps a small picture of each of your images (at most 256 pixels, in an IndexedDB database named “clayground-ref-thumbs”, up to 300 of them) so the page doesn’t download every full image again on each visit. Each picture is kept with only the image’s id and when it was kept, and is never sent anywhere. Deleting an image removes its picture; clearing this site’s data removes them all.
