First question: standalone or PC-linked?
Some VR sculpting tools run entirely on the headset. Others need a PC connected through Quest Link or Air Link, which gives more power but needs a capable computer and a cable or strong Wi-Fi. Decide which you want before comparing features. If you’re new to all of this, start with what VR sculpting is and how it compares with desktop tools.
At a glance
| App | How it runs on Quest | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Clayground | Standalone on the headset, plus a free browser studio | Sculpting characters in clay without a PC; beginners; phone-friendly sharing |
| Shapelab | Standalone versions and PC VR versions | Detailed sculpting with a larger toolset |
| SculptrVR | Standalone on Quest and on PC VR | Large voxel worlds with very deep zoom |
| Adobe Substance 3D Modeler (formerly Medium) | Quest with a PC link; also desktop | Professional pipelines and Adobe workflows |
Clayground
Volumetric clay sculpting with layers, painting, stamps, frame-by-frame animation and GLB or OBJ export, running on a standalone Quest. It is independent and young, so it is not a feature-for-feature match for older tools. It also has a free browser studio with a phone-friendly Easy mode for making a character in a minute.
Shapelab and SculptrVR
Shapelab is a well-regarded sculpting app with standalone and PC versions and a deeper toolset. SculptrVR is a voxel sculpting app known for building large scenes you can zoom into extensively. Check each store page for current pricing and features.
Weighing up Shapelab specifically? I put the two side by side in Clayground vs Shapelab.
Adobe Substance 3D Modeler
Adobe’s Modeler grew out of Oculus Medium, which Adobe acquired in 2019, and works in VR and on the desktop. It has been available on Quest through a PC link. It suits professional and Adobe-centred workflows; Adobe’s site has current platform support and pricing.
How to choose
- Want to start today on the headset you own, with no PC: try a standalone app.
- Want a professional pipeline and already use Adobe tools: look at Substance 3D Modeler.
- Not sure yet: try Clayground’s free browser studio to feel clay sculpting before you commit.
