An Adobe Medium alternative for Meta Quest

Medium is how a lot of people learned to sculpt in VR. If you want something that runs on the headset by itself, this is where Clayground fits, and where it doesn’t yet.

Why people look for an alternative

Adobe Medium started life as Oculus Medium, which Adobe acquired from Facebook in 2019 and later evolved into Substance 3D Modeler. Modeler is a mature, professional tool that works in VR and on the desktop, and it has been available on Meta Quest headsets connected to a PC.

People look for alternatives for different reasons: they want something that runs on a standalone Quest without a gaming PC, they prefer software from an independent artist, or they want a tool that feels closer to playing with clay than working in a professional pipeline.

Clayground is built for that second group. It is a young app, and this page says plainly where it is and is not a match. For what Adobe’s tools currently support and cost, including any standalone Quest support, check Adobe’s own site.

Where Clayground is not there yet

Clayground is not a feature-for-feature match for a long-running professional tool. The canvas is sparse rather than infinite, so very large scenes are limited by headset memory. Thin features, reusable asset libraries and deep character-rigging workflows are things I’m still working on.

If you need a mature production pipeline today, use the tool that fits it. If you want hands-on clay in VR on the headset you already own, keep reading.

Who Clayground suits

  • Artists who want to sketch characters and creatures in clay without a PC.
  • Beginners who want to feel what VR sculpting is before committing to a heavier tool.
  • Makers who want a GLB they can take into Blender, a game engine or a 3D printing workflow.
  • Anyone who wants to sculpt something cute on a phone in the browser in a couple of minutes.

Try it

The quickest way to see the feel is the free browser studio: open it on a computer or phone and make a character. When you are ready for VR, Clayground is on the Meta Quest store.

Read the VR sculpting guide if you are new to the idea, or the updates page to see how fast the app is moving.
