STL to OBJ

  • Kept. shape.
  • Size. Written in the unit you pick, millimetres for printing.
  • Up axis. OBJ stands on Y. The page stands the model up for you.

The two types

  • STL. STL describes a surface as triangles and nothing else: no colour, no units. Slicers read its numbers as millimetres. Opened by Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Blender, MeshLab and Fusion 360.
  • OBJ. OBJ is a plain-text shape format. It holds the surface and its UV coordinates, with materials in a separate .mtl file, and no bones or animation. Opened by Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, MeshLab, ZBrush, Windows 3D Viewer and almost every other 3D program.

Questions

How do I convert STL to OBJ?

Drop the STL file on this page, check the size under What’s inside, and press Download OBJ. It runs in your browser, so there is no upload and no wait.

What does STL to OBJ keep?

Everything this page reads from STL fits in OBJ: shape.

What size will the OBJ be?

OBJ has no units. The page writes the unit you pick under Write as, and the program that opens it decides what a number means: Blender reads OBJ as metres, slicers as millimetres.

Which way is up when I convert STL to OBJ?

STL files stand on a Z axis and OBJ stands on Y. The page stands the model up when it opens it, so the OBJ comes out upright.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is opened and converted in your browser, and it stays on your device.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on files.
