OBJ to STL
- Kept. shape.
- Dropped. colours and textures.
- Size. Written in the unit you pick, millimetres for printing.
- Up axis. STL stands on Z. The page turns the model for you.
The two types
- OBJ. OBJ is a plain-text shape format. It holds the surface and its UV coordinates, with materials in a separate .mtl file, and no bones or animation. Opened by Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, MeshLab, ZBrush, Windows 3D Viewer and almost every other 3D program.
- STL. STL describes a surface as triangles and nothing else: no colour, no units. Slicers read its numbers as millimetres. Opened by Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, Blender, MeshLab and Fusion 360.
Questions
How do I convert OBJ to STL?
Drop the OBJ file and its picture files on this page, check the size under What’s inside, and press Download STL. It runs in your browser, so there is no upload and no wait.
What does OBJ to STL keep?
STL keeps the shape. It has no place for colours and textures, so those are dropped.
What size will the STL be?
STL has no units, and slicers read its numbers as millimetres. The page writes millimetres, so a 40 mm part from OBJ arrives 40 mm long. If the size looks off, change File is in and Write as under What’s inside.
Why does my STL lie on its side in the slicer?
OBJ stands on its Y axis and slicers use Z. The Z up box, on by default, turns the model so it sits flat on the plate. Untick it for a program that expects Y up.
My OBJ has textures. Do I drop them too?
Drop the .mtl file and the picture files together with the .obj. Names are matched whatever folder they came from.
Will the STL print?
What’s inside says whether the surface is closed, which slicers need. If it is open, repair it in your slicer, Meshmixer or Blender first.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is opened and converted in your browser, and it stays on your device.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on files.
