PLY to OBJ

  • Kept. shape and colours.
  • Size. Written in the unit you pick, millimetres for printing.
  • Up axis. OBJ stands on Y. The page stands the model up for you.

The two types

  • PLY. PLY stores points or triangles with a colour per vertex. 3D scanners and photogrammetry tools write it. Opened by MeshLab, CloudCompare, Blender and most scanning software.
  • OBJ. OBJ is a plain-text shape format. It holds the surface and its UV coordinates, with materials in a separate .mtl file, and no bones or animation. Opened by Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, MeshLab, ZBrush, Windows 3D Viewer and almost every other 3D program.

Questions

How do I convert PLY to OBJ?

Drop the PLY file on this page, check the size under What’s inside, and press Download OBJ. It runs in your browser, so there is no upload and no wait.

What does PLY to OBJ keep?

Everything this page reads from PLY fits in OBJ: shape and colours.

What size will the OBJ be?

OBJ has no units. The page writes the unit you pick under Write as, and the program that opens it decides what a number means: Blender reads OBJ as metres, slicers as millimetres.

Which way is up when I convert PLY to OBJ?

PLY files stand on a Z axis and OBJ stands on Y. The page stands the model up when it opens it, so the OBJ comes out upright.

Why does a PLY from my scanner say it has no faces?

Some scanners save a cloud of points with no surface between them. Without faces there is nothing to convert. Build a mesh from the points in MeshLab or CloudCompare first.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is opened and converted in your browser, and it stays on your device.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on files.
